Wigan learners raise money for children’s hospice - 10/6/2011

AS part of a fundraising activity learners in Wigan and Leigh were asked to nominate charities. The final choice chosen by learners was the children’s charity Derian House Children Hospice.
All the staff and learners are involved in raising money to meet a target of £500. David Holden who is heading up the team together with Jayne Shaw and Louise Reay are working closely to ensure the success of the fundraising activity. “There is currently a 'guess the amount of pin curl clip' activity running in Wigan and Leigh training salons. Clients visiting the salons have the chance to win a salon voucher worth £20 if they successfully guess the number of clips.” Pre16 learners are about to undertake a massive model day session with all proceeds going to the children’s hospice. The final amount raised will be announced and presented at this year’s Wigan hair show which is due to be held on Monday 13th June.
If anyone has anyone has any fundraising ideas just let a member of staff know.

Apprentice Ryan Hunter talks on BBC radio - 15/5/2011

As part of National Apprenticeship week Venture Learning were invited to talk about training and apprenticeships during a live broadcast on BBC Radio Lancashire. As well as Ryan Hunter who works at Headters in Blackpool, Julie Podesta from the VL head office in Wigan and Andrew Fairbrother from Preston also took part. Ryan who is just about to complete his level 2 and who will start his level 3 Apprenticeship this later this year spoke very competently on the radio about his experience as an apprentice hairdresser.

“Pier pressure first made me go and train to be a car mechanic but that only lasted 6 weeks. I decided to do hairdressing which is really what I always wanted to do and didn’t care what some of my other friends thought.  I’ve always had a passion for hairdressing you need that passion otherwise you won’t enjoy your work or succeed.”

Success at the National Finals in Blackpool - 28/3/2011

Lucy Westhead, a Year 11 student from Hindley High School who is completing a Level 1 qualification with Venture Learning was awarded a 3rd place in the National finals of the AHT competitions held at the Blackpool Hair festival in March. Lucy was entered in to the regional finals, along with 5 other students after winning the Venture Learning in-house competitions. She was awarded 2nd place in the regional and secured a place in the National final.

The standard of work for the School link competitions was very high this year and for Lucy to achieve a 3rd place was a great achievement.
“Although I was very nervous about entering the competition against people from many other colleges I really enjoyed it and was thrilled to get placed in the top 3. Entering the competition and seeing all the other styles have given me lots of ideas for future. Lisa my trainer was really supportive, helpful and gave me lots of encouragement.”

VL directors set up salon in hospice - 10/2/2011

In January 2011 Venture Learning set up a hairdressing salon within the Wigan and Leigh Hospice. The company volunteers their time 3-days a week and provides hairdressing treatments to help make patient’s look and feel better. Barry Lord-gambles (Contracts Director) says “I am very fortunate that I am at a point in my life when I am able to and want to give something back to help others.”

The hospice has to raise approximately 1.5 million pounds per year in order to continue to provide the level of care for their patients. All salon treatments are provided fee of charge, however many of the patients are happy to donate money to the hospice after visiting the salon. Gary Slotwiner (Quality Director) “It is very rewarding being able to put your skills to such a good cause and to see the difference that you can make to those less fortunate”.  Hospice Chief Executive Stuart Liptrot says “We are extremely grateful to Venture Learning for their very generous support”.
